In a lot of White Knoll family rooms, the sectional works harder than the carpet does.
It's where homework gets done and where dinner gets eaten on game nights. The dog has a corner of it. A teenager who just came home from practice at White Knoll High drops onto it without changing. Carpet gets walked on; a sofa gets sat in, slept on, and spilled on, and it soaks up body oil from every person who leans back against it.
What dirty upholstery actually looks like
People expect stains. What they usually have is darkening. The arm fronts, the tops of the seat cushions, and the headrest area of the back go a shade or two darker than the rest, and because it happens slowly, nobody in the house notices until the cushions get flipped or a slipcover comes off. That darker fabric is oil holding onto soil. It also holds odor, which is why a couch can smell faintly sour even when it looks okay.
Our technician starts by checking the fabric tag and testing a hidden spot, since a few upholstery fabrics don't tolerate any water at all. Then the soiled areas get a pre-treatment to loosen the oil, and the fabric is cleaned with our carbonated solution and lifted dry. Very little moisture goes in, so the cushions aren't sitting damp overnight, and the family can usually be back on it by evening.
A note on microfiber
Plenty of family sectionals are microfiber, and it cleans up well. The catch is that it can look blotchy if someone has been spot-cleaning it with water. We can even that out most of the time. If the blotches came from a cleaner with bleach in it, that's permanent color loss and we can't bring it back.
Doing the room together
Since the family room is usually the busiest room in the house, it makes sense to clean the sofa and the carpet under it on the same visit. Otherwise a clean couch is sitting on a dirty floor. Our carpet coupon is 3 rooms for $88, and there's a separate $25 off upholstery cleaning. Your technician will walk through both with you and give you the total before starting. If you have dining chairs with fabric seats, those are worth pointing out too; they collect a surprising amount of spilled food.
