Stand in your front door and look toward the couch. In a lot of Oak Grove living rooms there's a faint path running across the carpet, a little darker than everything around it, following the exact route everyone takes to sit down.
That's a traffic lane, and it's the most common reason people along Augusta Rd call us.
What's in a traffic lane
The darker color comes from two things working together. Oily soil (cooking residue, skin oil, whatever's on the bottom of your shoes from the parking lot) gets pressed into the fibers with every step. Dry grit then sticks to that oily film and stays. Regular vacuuming gets the grit sitting on top. It can't touch the oil holding the rest of it down, which is why the lane keeps getting darker no matter how often you run the vacuum.
You also can't scrub it out yourself without trouble. A store carpet shampoo leaves soap behind, and soap residue is sticky, so the cleaned path picks up dirt faster than before and often comes back darker within a couple of months. We see that a lot.
How the lanes come back
Our approach on a lane is mostly about the pre-treatment. Your technician sprays the path with a cleaner that breaks down the oil, lets it work, and then agitates it. After that, the carbonated solution lifts the loosened soil up out of the pile, and the machine takes it away. Nothing soapy is left in the carpet, so the lane doesn't come back sticky. You can walk the path again within about an hour.
How well it works depends on what's under the dirt. Here's the honest version:
- A lane that's only soil comes out completely or close to it.
- A lane where the fibers are matted flat will look much cleaner but may still show, because flattened carpet reflects light differently.
- A lane where the color has actually worn off, which happens with some cheaper carpet in sunny rooms, won't change much. That's fiber damage, and cleaning can't add color back.
Your technician will tell you which one you've got on the walk-through, along with the price, before starting.
Keeping it from coming back
Shoes off at the door does more than anything else. A mat on both sides of the front door helps too, and so does moving the furniture a few inches every so often so the path shifts. Our opinion is that a living room on a busy road like Augusta Rd should get a professional cleaning about once a year. Wait much longer and the lane gets harder to fully reverse.
We clean homes throughout Oak Grove in 29073, on US-1 and the side roads off it like Hope Ferry Rd and Jessamine Rd. If you want to describe your lane first, call 803-310-5135 or send a message from our contact page. A living room, hallway, and one more room usually fit inside 3 rooms for $88, and the lane rarely needs more than that.
